I don’t know where to begin, except to say that Maria is probably the best thing that has happened to me in years! I am a physically transformed person – I am pain free, I am much stronger, and I look good. (Yesterday, my doctor told me I looked 41 not 61. Wow!) I have had physical therapy on and off for my back, neck, shoulder and wrist, so I knew everything Maria said about the method she uses made perfect sense and seemed medically sound. When I began working with her, I had a lot of foot pain from neuropathy due to previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, body aches from fibromyalgia, and shooting pain down my leg from sciatica; the long hours at the computer were taking a toll on my posture and strength. I also had pronated ankles and knocked knees; I had worn orthotics for years to correct the ankle pronation.
Maria was able to clear up the sciatica pretty quickly and she gave me stretching exercises to do to keep the pain from returning. Then we began to work on the rest of me. My posture, strength, muscle tone, balance and flexibility. I am ecstatic with the results. Maria explained that the apparent pronation and knock knees were due to an inward rotation of my hips, weak muscles and poor alignment of my feet. I had not been aware of any of that but she showed me and it was true. We began to build the muscles to kept the joints aligned. I am happy to say that now my legs and ankles are straight and I don’t need orthotics! And my feet feel so much better -- I am now able to hike carrying my heavy camera equipment and I can rise from kneeling or lying on the ground using just my legs instead of hauling myself up with my hands and arms. The improved muscle tone and exercise is an important part of managing elevated blood sugar and I now have it under better control.
Maria would have graduated me after about 6 months (I’ve now been having twice a week sessions with her for a year and a half) but I keep working with her because I continue to improve my strength and fitness and I think it is the best way for me to exercise and maintain my body awareness. And we have a good time, too.

A doctor of mine suggested that I work with Maria because I had frequent lower back pain and my posture was … apparently… quite abysmal. By the end of my first session with Maria, I knew that my chin was also misaligned, that my chest and shoulders were not open, etc., etc. She was right. I have had physical therapy in the past for my back and neck pain. The physical therapy however did not address the overall body alignment. Now I know that I don’t have a problem in my back or my neck but that it is the postural alignment that needs to be worked on to get rid of the pain. Critically important to me was the tone Maria used, and the time she waited, before letting me know everything that needed to be worked on. She has never, ever made me feel badly about myself or my body; on the contrary, she bestows praise when due and is incredibly sensitive and perceptive.
The Terol Method has helped many of my issues. My posture is so much better. It has helped me protect my back, even when I go to an exercise class at my gym where I am asked to do things that would otherwise have hurt me afterward. I have learned how to modify the exercises in the class by using the Terol Method. My tennis is also better. I am grateful for both the Method and the teacher. I recommend both highly.

I have had sciatic pain since I was 17, partly due to a shorter leg which was affecting my hip and back alignment. I also had a rounded upper back and really tight neck muscles. I started physical therapy at 19 for the sciatica but that helped only for a short time. The pain kept coming back. Next I started with the Terol Method. The pain only went away permanently after working with the Terol Method. I have learnt how to correct my whole body alignment. I know now how to position my feet, my neck …. every single part of my body. I have realized that every body part needs to be correctly aligned to avoid friction, and that what happens to my feet affect the sciatic pain, my neck, shoulders, etc. The Method is unique in the technique itself, the series of exercises and the way they are performed, the way it is taught. It’s a lot of work for the instructor. If you can, sign up! Everyone, regardless of their pain, should learn the Method’s technique to train and to avoid injury.

When I first started with the Terol Method, I suffered from lower back pain that limited the mobility of my right leg. I no longer suffer any pain and I have gained the mobility of the leg. No physical therapy I had tried achieved this. I believe the Method is unique in that it allows you to gain muscle tone even through the pain. It teaches body awareness in every movement to avoid the muscle compensation that occurs without this awareness. Wow, such a new concept to me, working out and thinking at the same time. It instills perfect body movement through isolation. It is hard work but worth it. I would recommend it to everyone. It has worked wonders for me.
